License of Microsoft Kinect For Windows SDK 1.0 says that it can be used with Kinect for XBox only for development and testing needs. Thus if you install yourself the full MS Kinect for Windows SDK 1.0 rather than redistributable drivers, it should work with Kinect for XBox.

Well it's not working so far. Have you had any in-house machines or customer's computers that do not work as soon as you install MS SDK 1? Seriously, as soon as I uninstall it, with Primesense still on my machine then Primesense kicks in again and works and iPi Recorder recognizes my XBox Kinects.

I've also tried it where I uninstall everything, so that Primesense isn't even on there. Then I install MS SDK and it shows, as you saw in my graphic, that MS SDK is controlling my XBox Kinects, but iPI recorder won't recognize them.

Hummm, so they came out with a Kinect for Win version. I have the original Xbox version and I wonder if I get the new version will ipi work with a mixed set or do they need to be a matched set?

Andrew, please answer my question 2 posts above and let me know if there is any additional information I can provide you with.

Also, I have a new question:
What is the official way for me to request technical support from your company? This forum doesn't seem to be the best way at the moment.

Thank you.

We didn't receive such reports excluding this one.

Could you please try the following steps:
  • unplug all Kinects from computer
  • uninstall all Kinect related drivers and software including iPi Recorder (to do it please use Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs)
  • reboot
  • install MS Kinect for Windows SDK 1.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/kinectforwindows/develop/
  • reboot
  • plug Kinects
  • install the latest iPi Recorder and run it

Thank you. After I do these steps should I switch to communicating directly via the ipisoft support email?

Hi Andrew,

Could you clarify this: If I'm using the Kinect Sensors for XBox with iPi DMC, should I switch to the Windows drivers? Does using the Windows drivers make any difference with the XBox version of the device or is the improvement only with new Windows version?

FWIW, I'm not getting any dropped frames when using the 'old' iPi-installed drivers so I'm not sure I need to switch over. Do you recommend switching?

I think I know the answer from the above comments but I want to be sure I understand correctly. Thanks in advance for any info.

G.

Hi guys,

Something to try: If your Kinect Sensors are angled at exactly 90 degrees, try narrowing the angle. I seem to be getting better results after I positioned my Kinects closer to where I had them when we shot 'Happy Box', which was a bit narrower than 90 degrees.

Also, if the sensors are too far from the calibration plane (in the blue zone for example,) you may see a slight volume offset between cameras. Positioning the plane in the middle of the green zone should be more accurate. I don't know this for a fact, it's just a guess based quick observation of recent capture data.

Hope this helps.

G.

We're still recommending psdrv3 driver as mainstream for Kinects for XBox.
When and why someone could want to switch to MS SDK:
  • 3d party software is used and this software uses MS SDK
  • sensors in use are Kinect for Windows rather than Kinect for XBox
  • there are issues with USB (looks like that drivers from MS are more stable with some USB controllers)
