Wait, is there going to be an upgrade discount for owners of v1?

The info on the iPi Soft website says 60% off for v1 users; free if you purchased in the last 90 days.

Upgrade seems maybe a little high for some users based on what's been announced. I'm curious to see just how improved the accuracy is, and wondering if getting that accuracy requires upgrading to the new Kinect devices.

For me, the improved accuracy, even with the current gear, is worth a lot but the feature that has me sold is the following bullet point: "New actor appearance models and skeleton structure with improved accuracy in multiple person tracking, props tracking and head/hands tracking." I can certainly use many of the other announced features but, to me, this alone is worth upgrading.

I hope iPi Soft will offer a pre-release beta as they have in the past. Getting the dual Kinect beta early made a huge difference during the making of 'Happy Box', so I'm very eager to get this for our current movie production!

Hi

will the head, hand, prop and finger tracking in IPI 2.0 be available for PS3 based systems as well as kinect systems?

I ask as recent updates seem to be focused on expanding the the features of the kinect side of things and I was fearful that ps3 development might get sidelined

Cheers

Steve

Just a guess but I would imagine yes. Kinect is getting more attention lately because it's new and it's very easy to use, and the PS3 Eye System has already had a few years of development from iPi ahead of Kinect and it works quite well. In fact, four to six PS3 Eye cameras are still better for large area capture and can be more accurate than Kinect. I don't think iPi is going to neglect it in 2.0.

From the little bits that have been revealed in the press release, it sounds like the accuracy improvements in 2.0 are mainly in the tracking system, and the way the current iPi Studio tracks capture data is essentially the same for PS3 Eye or Kinect. In fact, six PS3 Eye cameras will probably still produce more complete 3D volume data than Kinect after 2.0 comes out. (Yes, both technically do 360 but it's six vantages vs. two, plus PS3 has twice the framerate.)

That isn't to say there won't be improvements in recording. I think the new optimized file format may improve capture results--but I'm sure this benefits both Kinect and PS3 Eye systems. Eventually, Windows Kinect may possibly improve accuracy over XBox Kinect but the system will still only capture from two vantages vs. six, and its range may still be limited compared to PS3 Eye.

Of course this is ALL just speculation. I'm not a 2.0 beta tester so I really don't know anything. Just making conversation. :p

In the meantime, sit tight. We'll get real info from Michael or Andrew when the launch date arrives, which doesn't sound that far away.

Edited for tons of typos. Never post at 5 am. :p

I missed the free upgrade by 1 month! ...how gutted am I!

Yeah, like we're all NOT going to buy it anyway! I bet Mr Bones is counting the days on his calender to release ;)

I'm presuming there will be some kind of Ipi DMC 2 video on You Tube or Vimeo showing it in action?

I would definately like to see the hands/fingers tracking in use before parting with my hard-earned cash.
Good news on the head tracker though...

That's worth the money in itself! No more...tweak...track forward....tweak......track forward.....lose the will to live.....track forward

Is iPi Soft open to a tiered discount for owners of previous versions?

For instance, I purchased the basic version at the end of 2011. If version 2 is released in April, then I and others would miss the free upgrade anywhere from 1-3 weeks.

Depending on how far out one purchased the product, perhaps it could be an 80% then 70% discount.

Dang, I didn't know they were going to release 2.0 soon. That's funning, by the time I am finally fully ready to test 1.0, 2.0 will be just about released. And the upgrade cost will surpass the original price I paid as an early adopter.

I can't complain. I've been using the software for about three years now. :)
