When I playback my animations in Motionbuilder, they are playing back at super fast speed. How do I retain the speed I recorded at?

Thanks

I don't think I've ever seen that. Are you saving .bvh for Motion Builder? This is what I use in MB.

Also, check your playback rate in MB. I'm not sure you can change framerate in iPi--I believe it just plays back at whatever rate you captured at. By default, Kinect is 30fps, so if you use Kinect make sure MB is set to playback at 30fps. Some webcams may record as low as 15fps and as high as 60fps so MB needs to be set to match.

Of course, you can convert in MB if necessary.

I'm crash coursing in Motionbuilder at present, learning a great deal as the days pass. My clip is playing 4 times too fast in there, but I dont actually know how to change a clips speed there. The playback rate is set right: 30 fps. Are you able to tell me what tool I would use to adjust overall clip playback speed? Thanks a bunch

In the Transport Controls window, look at the popup just the to left of the fps popup. This controls your playback speed and should say 1x for normal playback. Note that frames may be dropped if your computer/graphics card isn't fast enough for realtime playback.

Just to be clear, the popup that says fps does not change your framerate--all this does is change the time format display. It's the popup to the left of that you want to change.

Hope that works for you.

If that doesn't work, let me know. It's been a couple of months since I last used MB so I could use a refresher myself. :)

Seems to be that this is a motionbuilder problem. My animations were 4x too fast in MB, so I made them the right speed using the story tool in stretch mode rather than loop, and then on export the normal speed animations were 4x too slow..and I was set to 30fps in mobu..
Quite odd really.

Hmm...that is strange. Are you using Kinect or PS3 Eye? It really shouldn't matter but I'm curious. Also, are you exporting .bvh for Motion Builder from iPi Studio or some other format? For Motion Builder, I typically output .bvh for Motion Builder and retarget there.

Back when we did Happy Box, which might have been one or two iPi DMC versions ago, the playback speed in MB was always correct. I haven't had time to do anything more recent in lately.

I'm a bit tied up with work and other projects at the moment to do much iPi testing right now but I can try exporting my 'small child' test into Motion Builder and see what happens. That test was recorded with twin Kinects using the current release of iPi and I'll be bringing the data into Motion Builder 2010.

I"ll let you know what I see here.

Thanks Greenlaw. Did you see I PM'd you awhile back?
I'm using Motionbuilder 7.5, the last available build for Mac. I have a second install on PC though.
Using FBX, as FBX has been the backbone of my game development pipeline since way back when. I can import fbx straight into my modelling app but not bvh

Cheers

I see. My workflow is a bit different. I do my modeling and rigging elsewhere, and bring the rigged character as an FBX into Motion Builder. Then I export .bvh from iPi Studio and import that into MB. Since I'm doing the retargeting in Motion Builder, it really isn't necessary to use FBX--all I'm interested in is the motion data. After retargeting the .bvh data to my rig in MB (and performing any necessary edits,) I export an FBX of the rigged character with mocap applied for my 3D animation program (or game engine as the case may be.)

Anyway, you might want to give .bvh a try as it imports into Motion Builder with proper scale and fps, and after retargeting the end result can still be an FBX file. (When exporting a .bvh animation from iPi, be sure to use the special Motion Builder version.)

Sorry for the delayed response to your PM--it's been extremely busy these past few weeks at work and at home. I'll try to write when things settle a bit.

Thanks Greenlaw I will export bvh's and try that pipeline.

Prior to mobu I used to convert bvh to fbx in blender. I've only just licensed Mobu so have to retink my pipeline a bit!.
