CGISoul,

If you're really interested in 'entry-level' face capture systems, there are two current solutions I'm aware of. Sorry, I don't have much experience with face capture because I've never actually needed it, but here you go:

1. Zigntrack 2 and Zigntrack Pro. This is a fairly inexpensive marker-based solution. It's been around for several years and it outputs various formats. I dabbled with an early version but never actually applied it to anything myself. I recall that some users in these forums have used it but I'm not sure I've seen the results. Maybe there are demo videos by users on YouTube?

2. Maskarad. This one interests me because it's a markerless solution but the price may be considered a little expensive for 'hobbyists'. I've never used this system myself but the results at their YouTube channel are very interesting. (FWIW, I do use another program offered by this company called Facial Studio Pro to quickly generate human heads with embedded morph targets using two photographs as a source. It's really fast and fun to use. The results are not 'hero' models but they work fine for background characters or as a base for more finished models.)

I don't want to discourage anybody from trying but, IMO, face capture is not a trivial matter. It's one thing to capture face data with a web cam but retargeting the data convincingly and predictably to a character in a 3D program can get complicated. And once you have that, tweaking the data could easily become a full-time task. I suspect many 'indie' artists eventually decide it's easier and faster to simply keyframe the morphs to a reference video. I think this is why you don't typically see face capture used for small cg productions.

Of course, only a couple of years ago I would have said similar things about body capture, so what do I know? :p

G.

I have zigntrack but have yet to test it out. I have been reading up on tips to get the best results and it appears from all accounts that it is hard to get good results. Apparently the markers don't pick up too well no matter what you use for them.

Just remember that facial mocap is usually done separately from full body mocap.

Hi Greenlaw,

Thanks for your input and sorry for my late reply.

I looked at the zigntrack and not so sure about it. Having mix feelings about it.
For the moment, I just started the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9o8D04K74 and let see how this will turn out.
It certainly fun to play with. I'm building my own helmet and hunting for the materials in the shop Hahaha

Just checked the Maskarad....... that looks promising, but the price itself is quite expensive for me.

I'm wondering if in v.2 we could do hand mocap?

according to the 2.0 list the hand mocap will only be key framing within ipi. I would shell out the extra to upgrade if it were a seperate recording pass for just the hands.

I'm a bit concerned right now that its nearly the end of April and 2.0 isn't out. We bought DMC in march or February and I hope we are covered to get the upgrade within the 90 day period. Is 2.0 going to come out before this month is over or what?

Due to unexpected technical difficulties, we have delay with Version 2.0 release. The release is re-scheduled for May. In accordance with our policy, those who purchased Version 1.x within 3 months before official Version 2.0 release date will get free update to Version 2.0. We will also offer free update to Version 2.0 for those who purchased Version 1.x after 6th March (official Version 2.0 announcement).

The head hands are animatable now in DMC. Without keyframes even.

Look Here for the Proof.

Hey, guys. Have you seen this video? Is this some kind of scam?
It states that the current version o Ipi already has head tracking. Any thoughts?

Hello!

Looks like boneym (aka mrbones) lives in his own magic world where iPiStudio has some features that it doesn't have in the reality.
