Can I use a powered USB hub and a very long extension for a printer with the square end on the other side ?

You'll need an active usb extender. The passive ones are just extension cables and the signal becomes unusable after a certain distance. The active ones boost the signal. You could probably use a powered USB hub as an extender. If you have one, let us know how it works. If not, powered extenders are fairly cheap, there's a link to one on newegg in one of the recent posts.
