Thanks for you answer, andrew. I posted this video, because I really don't get it... even if it was true (I'm not saying it is), how would he benefit from it, by making it free?
That's why I was suspicious about it.

Hey, guys. Have you seen this video? Is this some kind of scam?
It states that the current version o Ipi already has head tracking. Any thoughts?

I believe "hack" would be more appropriate to say.

I do not think this "poor man's keyframing" hack is practical. It may be easier just to keyframe head movement in some third-party app.

In future versions of our software we will implement more practical keyframing tools for hands and (possibly) head.

I thought future versions would have head and hand TRACKING, not key framing...

What they said was that head and hand tracking is scheduled for 3rd or 4th quarter 2012, but when they say 'hands' I believe what they actually mean wrist tracking (i.e., no finger joints). The iPi engineers explained that the Kinect and PS3 Eye resolution isn't high enough for fingers.

What 2.0 will have is hands with finger bones in the rig, which I'm assuming will be poseable, and possibly keyframeable. It's been requested by some users that they add a pose library for hand poses--that would be very useful if you're not going to keyframe the fingers elsewhere. I don't know if they are interested in implementing this.

Hope this clarifies what to expect in the coming year.

G.

Edited for specific detail and correction.

BTW, here's the actual announcement:

http://ipisoft.com/V2_0_ann.html

The info about keyframeable fingers and explanation for why no tracking for fingers is in the lower section titled 'New Features and Enhancements Details'.

If they can keep to the current schedule, it looks like Q3 is going to be pretty amazing.

The wrists heads and hands are keyframeless advancable faster than tracking.......

Race Past the competion and save thousands of hours easily bypassing traditional techniques of old and boring keyframing.

The McPeek Technique incoporates "keyframeless advancing",

The head hands and feet are all completely animated instantaneously.

This procedure occurs even faster than tracking on the fastest graphics card.

Over 100 times faster than traditional keyframing.

My question, is why are you trying to charge for an upgrade for features already available?

This is not a hack or third party program. it is not faster than in a third party program.

This is iPi as it is right now.

P.S. Grab your 3-D Glasses. all of our movies are in Stereoscopic HD 3-D

Hi, mrbones.
I don't mean to offend you (actually,I'm grateful for you helping me a while back in a tracking thread), but it is really hard to accept the idea of the free service you offer.
I mean, if you found this loophole on the software, what is the purpose of this? If you want to promote your company by making mocap accessible, great. But how will you profit from it? Will you keep the mocap files and re-sell it? Because, to my mind, if you just wanted to spread the truth about it, you wouldn't have deleted the videos from the thread "Head Movement now possible".

Unless i'm missing something, this isn't built in. What is being done is just brute forcing by holding the mouse down and dragging it to follow the actor movements.
It sort of works if the movement isn't complex but in the "how to" video, there's definite dragging of the mouse to force the head to rotate while the tracking is taking place and that's not exactly what's claimed by just "hold the mouse button down".

Further, this needs to be repeated for feet and hands if they are to move too so i'd have to go through the tracking process maybe five or six times.

I do think it's somewhat misleading and unfair to be calling out ipisoft for something that "has been there all the time" and in answer to the question of how can a free tracking service be offered, I think the answer is buried in history. If i'm not mistaken, the individual used to be an ipisoft reseller and now there's nothing listed on the site. I take it that this is being offered out of spite, given the forum threads on the site concerned.

I don't appreciate the bait and switch on fake "introductory pricing" which was when I purchased and then there never was a price rise, instead it went down and I don't appreciate the "upgrade" costing more overall than had I waited and bought v2 but ... that's just how it is and i'm a bit bored of reading between the lines to pick out what's real and what's bad blood.

Our research shows that possibility of wrist and head tracking may highly depend on video recording conditions (lighting, etc.). So having some keyframing tools as a back-up should still be useful anyway.
