AFAIK, recording is mostly dependent on CPU and drive speed, and of course having an adequate number of USB controllers for sufficient bandwidth. A fast graphics card might help playback performance but I don't think it has any impact on recording.
Tracking, on the other had, gets a huge boost in performance if you have a good graphics card with a fast GPU.
As mentioned in the other thread, because recording is less demanding on graphics processing, some users will record with a laptop and track with a desktop. For me, my laptop was inadequate for dual Kinect capture, so I do both steps with a desktop now.
Tip: My desktop is located in a different room from where the Kinects are, so I run daisy-chained repeater cables to the Kinects and operate the computer remotely using a tablet PC with the free version of TeamViewer. This has been convenient because the tablet PC is on Wifi and I can control iPi Recorder from anywhere in the room.
