Not with iPi DMC. I'm not even sure using three or more Kinects is even possible because of confusion that may arise from multiple IR sources. That said, it was assumed before that you couldn't use two Kinects for this same reason and iPi Soft certainly proved that incorrect. :)

But in my opinion getting more than two Kinects to work together and still be able to distinguish the rays from each IR source might be asking too much. I think you may also run into synchronization issues. For example, even with just two Kinects, I've seen temporal drifting and other sync issue. It's not a serious problem with two Kinects but with more devices I imagine it could become so.

If you need more detailed coverage than what two Kinects offer, I think it would be better to go with the PS3 Eye setup. With six PS3 Eyes, you will also get a higher frame rate (60fps) and a larger capture space. What Kinect gives you is greater convenience and easier setup.

Hope this info is helpful.

Which camera is able to detect a greater distance?
For example, I am using the Kinect.
But moving characters is limited. Because it can not distinguish between more than 2 or 3 meters. and when i use kinect , i cant move much on scene.
The ps eye is better than Kinect?

The specs are listed here:

Short answer: PS3 Eye.

And now the long answer:

The Eye camera is video based (RGB) so technically speaking, the range is as far as it can 'see'. In practical terms, the capture space is 20 x 20 ft or 7 x 7 m. The higher frames rate also helps with precision tracking.

Kinect does not use video, it uses infrared light (IR). The advantage with this is that it can capture actual 3D depth data from a single camera; with two you get 3 dimensional data from two vantage points, making it possible to get full 360 degree coverage with only two cameras. The downside is that the IR range is very short by comparison making the effective capture space for Kinect only about 7 x 7 ft or 2 x 2 m. Also, because Kinect has a lower framerate (30fps), you cannot capture really fast motions as accurately as PS3 Eye (60fps).

I like both systems but prefer Kinect most of the time because it's much easier to set up (plug-and-play) and I can use it in my living room without the need of special lighting or clothing. To use Kinect, I simply set up sticks in the living room, plug the devices into my computer and I'm ready to go.

However, I also keep PS3 Eye available to capture very complex or 'big' motions if I need it. With up to six cameras, you can capture a lot of data for more precise volume reconstruction in Studio. I've seen some iPi users using this setup for very elaborate actions stunts and fight scenes.

However, to use PS3 Eye I would have to shoot outside of my house because it requires a larger environment. Additionally, it requires special clothing, lighting considerations, and moving my computer equipment out of the house, all of which increases the 'hassle' factor quite a bit.

When working on our projects, I try to storyboard most of the shots around what I know we can do with Kinect, and save the tricky stuff for a single 'special' capture sessions if it becomes necessary.

So far, with our Little Green Dog productions, we've been able to capture everything we need with dual Kinect. For you, this depends entirely on how you intend to use the captured data of course.

There is no sense in placing more than 2 Kinects around capture area like PS Eye cams, because this will not give considerably higher accuracy, or increased capture area. But will cause more IR interference problems, as Greenlaw already mentioned. Besides, there may be problems just in connecting more Kinects to a PC (basically, each additional Kinect requires an additional USB controller).
But it can make sense if we figure out some displacement to increase capture area. For example, place 2 pair of Kinects in 180 degrees side by side to get "corridor" area. Or combine each 2 Kinects in single point to increase field of view. Using such configs involve much experimental work, they imply new calibration methods. We plan to give some time to these experiments in the next year.

That's a very interesting idea! As always, I'll look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.
