Hi,

This was the first time i came around to use iPi Studio V2 with our 4 playstation eye configuration. The setup of the cameras was pretty much the same as used in V.1, there the calibration of the scene and the calculation of the camera positions was pretty good as well.

Now in V.2 i have tried 4 times with a new recording to calibrate the scene. The problem i got:
- Cameras were completely miss positioned (in all my tries that it seems that especially camera 3 and 4 (3 is the highest, 4 is the scond lowest)

In the first calibration with the capturing video darkened i could make out where i was standing and so i thought I'd just try it. The processing of the action video worked, however the actor was quite differently placed as my initial position (and that was ruffly the same as the starting point for the calibration) and i had to scale up its height to 2.5 meters. When i captured another Action Take and created a new Project imported the same scene setting as before, the cameras were so completely messed up, even almost upside down. (This might be because it was a different day and it could be that the camera order was not the same anymore)

I have ordered my cameras from right to left (Lowest, Medium, Highest, 2nd Lowest) and tried thiferend orders of putting the light on the ground. None of the things worked.

What am i doing wrong? It has been quite a wile since we used the PS Eye setup in V1 and it could be that i forgot some important thing. I just remeber that then it was quite easy to to the calibration.

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Have you checked the Auto detect initial camera positions option before processing the calibration?
If it does not help, you can instead turn it off and manually set approximate initial positions of the cameras. In this case, it is recommended to order cameras in Recorder either clockwise, or counter-clockwise. Then in Studio you can start with one of the standard full or half circle configurations and make not much adjustments for initial positions.

General tips for recording calibration video:
  • Set Darkening for calibration[b] property at the Setup stage to [b]Darkening or Extra darkening.
  • As with any video, ensure you have evaluated good background (no moving objects, lighting changes, etc). It's better not to have intensive light sources in the view during calibration.
  • Ensure the light marker is visible to nearly all cameras all the time. For example, it is not obscured by your body.
  • Move considerably slow, so the marker is not blurred on the video

I've got to echo Hangout's problem.

I'm actually so frustrated at this point I could punch my dog! ;)

Anyhow, I've done everything as well as the points brought up and just not getting proper calibration with the sony setup. THANKS SO MUCH for making the Kinect work like it does. If all I had to work with was the web cam config I would simply find another software because the calibration is so infuriatingly picky. There must be a better way.

Sorry... had to rant.

Yes, the calibration with Kinects is easier because they already provide some geometric information. With regular cams we have only color info, and must restore the geometry from it - it's just more complicated. We are finding the ways to make it easier for use.
Can we help you in your troubles with calibration? You can send us one of your calibration videos (through some sharing service) so we can have a look and make some suggestions.
