hello all. I have seen alot of video tutorials of ipisoft and when ppl are showing the speed of tracking (how fast it goes through each frame) their animation is tracked within minutes. But when I try to do the tracking it takes hours. is there a certain graphics card i should get to get those speeds?

Speed is highly dependent on the graphics card--specifically, the GPU and it's ability to process physics.

This is my personal preference but I recommend any of the recent Nvidia Geforce GTX cards--do a search in the forums for what other iPi Mocap Studio users are saying. I use a two or three year old GTX 460 and it's still pretty decent--about 0.67 per frame--it's a little slower when I enable head tracking but, now that we have PS Move capture for the head, I don't bother. But the new GTX cards should be MUCH faster.

If you're using a laptop for tracking, you options are very limited. Most users who use a laptop for capture will switch to a full desktop for optimal tracking performance. (I use a desktop for both recording and tracking just to be sure I'm capturing and tracking at full speed.)

Also, check the iPi wiki for a comparison of graphics cards. The hardware on the chart was a bit dated the last time I checked but it will give you an idea what to expect.

well i am on a alienware laptop m17x with a GTX 660 video card I believe. Is that pretty good or should look into upgrading the video card. can't remember what kind of CPU I have. Will have to check it later.

GTX 660 is a good videocard, and you can expect tracking speed between 1 and 2 frames per second. Most probably, your laptop is automatically switching to CPU-integrated graphics (that has very poor performance), and your great GTX is sitting idle. You need to turn this switching off, though it can be tricky. Here you can find the description of this problem and recommendations: https://support.zspace.com/entries/2300 ... ia-Optimus

As you are using a laptop, you video card is Nvidia GTX 660M (where "M" stands for "mobile"). It is dramatically slower then a desktop GTX 660.

In fact, all top notebook video cards are much slower then modern mid-range desktop video cards. The reason for this is thermal constraints on notebooks.

You should switch off integrated graphics, though. Integrated graphics is much slower then GTX 660M.

thank you very much. There is a switch on the laptop to use the Nvidia graphics. had to restart the computer and install all of the drivers. Now it runs great. tracked a 6000 frame animation in 15 mins. Mobile or not, it is still better than my desktop which can't even run ipi studio because the graphics card doesn't support it. maybe i will upgrade the graphics card on my tower. but most likely I won't be using it.
