lol - this is very much a 'the more you learn the more questions' :-)

- so i've arranged to borrow a kinect tonight so i'll try doing a very basic (and slow) capture over the next few days.... I'll see what i can produce ... this is really so that I have confidence in the entire end-to-end solution and can provide a demo to the 'club' so they understand what we can do... then i can move it into the dojo.

- based on all your input, I think the PS Eye will be the 'final' solution though...
- i have 2 more PS Eye cameras in the box 'ready' (so a total of 6) and also 2 ps3 moves... .. ..(but then i'll also need to address the USB controllers on my laptop ;-))

thanks again - i'll update this thread with how i go for other 'newbies'

graham

p.s. Greenlaw - LOVED the 'sister' video... the way the hair moves is awesome

Sorry--typo. I meant to say I recommend Kinect for Windows, not Kinect for XBox.

Kinect for XBox will work and it's cheaper but there are some important downsides to using these devices on a PC running Windows. First, Kinect for XBox is not officially supported by Microsoft for use with Windows so MS driver support may go away at some point in the future. There are third party drivers available but there is no guarantee that these will continue either. Also, the XBox warranty does not cover its use with a PC.

Kinect for Windows, on the other hand, is officially supported and Microsoft provides and routinely updates drivers for this purpose. The warranty obviously covers use on a PC with Windows. For me, the extra video controls you get with Kinect for Windows makes it worth the extra cost, especially with iPi Mocap Studio. Kinect for Windows also has Near Mode, which is useful for face capture (using other software) and for 3D object scanning.

Regarding Sister, thanks, glad you enjoyed that. We have a one minute excerpt of our film on our Vimeo channel here: Excerpt from 'Brudders 2'

We're still working on this film, but currently distracted by another short film we're making for this year's Gothtober. We still hope to finish 'B2' not long after Halloween, and then start working on our first 'cat-free' mocap movie. :)

If you want to get multiple-actor capture, you'll need 6-8 PS Eyes (more cameras reduce occlusion causing tracking errors). In that case you should consider moving to a desktop to get sufficient USB bandwidth (you can get additional USB controllers via PCIe cards). Desktop graphics would also be a lot help (NVIDIA GTX series preferred).
