Give them a few days to figure it out. :)

According iPi Soft's latest newsletter, they just got their Kinect 2 for Windows pre-release developer's kit. No other details offered other than they hope to support the device sometime in 2014.

Looking forward to it.

Yes, we've got our "developer preview" device.
First impressions after quick tests:
  • It has better resolution than Kinect 1 for both depth and color
  • There is no noticeable noise in the depth picture
  • The range is about 4-5m - the same as Kinect 1.
  • There are considerable distortions at the edges of depth picture, probably thanks to the greater field of view

We'll put more info after we spend some time evaluating the device.
Unfortunately, we won't have any accurate info on multiple Kinect 2 support until its release, because we only have one device.

When will Kinect 2 for Windows be released? Can`t seem to find any information on concrete release date. I need to know if I will be able to use ipisoft with the new kinects around begining of march or should I get two X360 kinects now and be done with it.

The sensor is currently in Alpha release to selected developers. According to the official website, Microsoft intends to launch the final version of Kinect 2 for Windows in the summer of 2014, so figure maybe six months from now.

You can read about it here:

Hello,

I just wanted to add to this conversation about Kinect v2 that I found on the internet.

I'm sure that vmaslov is quite aware of the "Kinect for Windows v2 Developer Preview Program" located here -> http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/kinectfo ... evkit.aspx. If not, you have until Jan 31, 2014 to apply. So, I wouldn't be worried considering ipiSoft has things under control since day one.

Here's some interesting things that I've discovered about the Kinect v2 for windows, just in case no one is aware of this.

1) It has full HD through the color camera and a much improved depth camera as well as USB 3.0 data throughput.

2) Most of the processing is now done on the GPU rather than the onboard chip or your computer’s CPU. Kinect for Windows v1 solutions require a ton of processing power. We always throw hardware at the solutions. In v2, this problem seems to have been overcome.

3) Kinect for Windows v2 has much better skeletal tracking than its predecessor; more joints are detected and many of the jitters that developers had to overcome are now gone. The Kinect for Windows v2 SDK, currently in alpha format, recognizes up to six skeletons natively, as compared to the two skeletons recognized by the v1 device.

4) The Kinect for Windows v2 has a brand new sensor with Microsoft’s own time-of-flight technology, and this new sensor is currently unmatched in performance and fidelity in the 3D-camera market.

The original article can be found here -> http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=ca

So, to conclude these findings as dismiss able would truly be insane, not that I'm saying that ipiSoft is dismissing anything Kinect v2 related. Please add your thoughts to this. Take care.

Cheers!

I'm considering setting up a mocap system using iPi Motion Capture "fairly soon" ... so I was wondering if waiting for the Kinect for Windows v2 would be reasonable or whether starting with another setup (e.g. 2 of the old kinects) would make more sense? It seems like the planned release date for Kinect for Windows v2 will be "summer 2014", so this could still be a comparatively long wait.

On the other hand, buying 2 kinects now just to replace them with two new kinects v2 seems a bit like a waste.

How's development going with the v2 devkit? Is there any way MS could give you two devices?

To wait or not to wait... This depends mostly on your your mocap project schedule. If you in a rush with your project, then better to start sooner. If a delay of several months does not matter, why not to wait?
There is an additional info for you to consider. We plan to introduce the support for Kinect 2 in a new major version of our software. So this will be a paid update. As usual, customers of previous versions will be given a discount.

The new Kinect is already supported by development versions of Recorder and Mocap Studio. Basically, it's the same as the current Kinect with increased resolution, a bit greater FOV and a bit less noise. Thus, the accuracy of tracking is expected to be slightly better.
We plan to consider using some of the tracking capabilities in Kinect SDK at a later time. Aiming to increase the tracking speed and/or decreasing the number of tracking errors.
No info about using multiple sensors yet. According to conditions of the beta program, we should get another device, a final one, sometime near the release to public. We've requested the second preliminary device, but have not got a definite answer yet. However, the number of devices for beta program is quite limited, so it is unlikely that our request will be fulfilled.

Thank you for the quick reply - that's very much appreciated. As I have time with the schedule, I'll probably wait until the Kinect 2 is available and supported. The main issue for me is whether I should buy two old Kinects which would probably just collect dust once I can use the newer Kinects. Plus the additional costs due to having to upgrade to a new version (I don't own iPi Motion Capture, yet, but am planning to get it once Kinect 2 is supported).

Thanks for the 'behind-the-scenes' update vmaslov!

This is very exciting news. I better start saving. :)

Now that the pre-order for the Kinect for Windows V2 has become available, I was wondering if there is any new information about using two of the new Kinects with the Ipisoft capture, as far as problems like interference between the two. I was wondering if it would be worth pre-ordering two Kinects in anticipation of buying the Ipisoft software. Will the Ipisoft software work with the new Kinects fairly soon after the Kinect July 15th release?
