I've been holding off ipi software due to the announcement of Kinect v2 for PC launching this year ...
So my question is, will the Kinect V2 have significant improvements compared to the Kinect v1 in terms of, handling mocap with iPi (obviously, couldn't care less about Xbone) ...

Kinect 2 is definitely better than Kinect 1. Main advantages:
- Higher definition (both point cloud and RGB)
- Wider view angle (allows to come close to the sensor, so requires less space)
- Less mutual interference in case of using several sensors

It will give certain benefits for tracking. We can expect less tracking errors. But the difference will not be that dramatic, as resolution is not so critical for markerless tracking.

Will Kinect 2 it permit the accurate tracking of the head and the wrists?

Is there any release date for a new Kinect 2 supporting Ipi?

Why won't the results be completly different? I mean it's a real time of flight technique,
isn't it for that reason something completly different?

Thx Alex

My understanding is that higher resolution helps with a RGB video based system like the PS3 Eye Camera because is it allows you to capture at greater distances. However the extra resolution doesn't mean much for Kinect capture (as implemented in Mocap Studio) because the distance is limited by the range of the depth sensor, not RGB data. Kinect 2 for Windows may allow a future release of Mocap Studio to generate a higher res point cloud, which is great for capturing details for meshes but that doesn't necessarily translate as significantly improved accuracy for motion tracking. Remember Mocap Studio achieves its exceptional accuracy with standard desktop computers because it is not a real time system.

Of course this doesn't mean Mocap Studio won't benefit from the advanced features of the Kinect 2--I imagine the depth data is much cleaner than what we get using the original Kinect for Windows. And the engineers at iPi Soft are very clever--who knows what other tricks they have up their sleeves? :)

As for when, I don't think they posted a specific date. So far they suggested sometime shortly after the official release of Kinect 2. (Technically Kinect 2 is still in a public beta phase, so not quite yet.)

I wonder if they will make an announcement during Siggraph. (Just speculating.) :)

Thanks, I'm looking forward to hear something concrete from iPi :)
Btw. will there be a beta programm for new iPi/Kinect2 Version you can apply for?
We'd really appreciate taking part in a beta programm.

Thanks :)

The Kinect 2 cameras for Windows are out. I have two sitting in my office. Waiting for program updates to use them.

Kinect 2 support will be introduced in v3 of our software. It's planned to be released in September.
We do not have a beta testing program.

That is really great news... & a Sept. release is just around the corner.

Sure would love to beta-test with Unity3D Pro :)
