I just got a bunch of PS3 Move controllers @ gamestop for next to nothing (Black Friday sales!). This morning, I'm attempting to pair no less than 6 Move controllers to ipirecorder. I'm using a bluetooth dongle on an ASUS laptop; TrendNet TBW-106UB A separate dongle is unfortunately the only way that I can can use these controllers in a recording. I first thought that the dongle had a limited number of connections allowed. It's possible that the magic number is 7. At least with what I could tell from my 9 fully functional controllers.

I got as many as 7 controllers of the 9 I own to have steady a steady glow for the power indicators which says to me "These controllers are paired with the bluetooth dongle". The other two just blink until they turn off. I think that of the 9, only 7 devices of any sort can be connected. This might simply be a question of "what dongle will allow me to connect all 9 successfully?" 7 is good, but 9 is my goal for the hopefully future release of 3 person simultaneous motion capture as I read in future releases of the Professional package slated for some time in 2015. I want to be able to have 3 actors each with 3 Move controllers on their person; one for the head and the other two for the wrists. I can understand if ipirecorder isn't updated to support 9 Move controllers at present, that may be an update in the recording software. What I'm concerned about is that I can only connect 4 of the apparently 7 active Move controllers at one time (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO).

Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or simply need a recommended dongle that does NOT have this problem. I kind of feel that it's the software that's not working, but i know that I've read somewhere on this forum success in at least 6 controllers. That alone would make me very happy:)

First, the "magic" number 7 is indeed strictly specified in BT specs as the maximum number of devices that could be simultaneously connected to a single host (BT adapter). So 9 controllers with a single BT dongle is simply impossible by design.
Next, 4 "working" controllers is probably a limitation imposed by data bandwidth. PlayStation console also can connect up to 4 PS Moves. I have not seen any BT dongle that can handle more.

However, Motion in Joy drivers have a great feature of using more than a single BT dongle at once. So, you could plug a second dongle, and pair each 3 PS Moves to a separate dongle. Thus having 6 in total. I have not experimented with more than 2 dongles, but probably this is the way to use 9 PS Moves.

Definitely going to try the double-dongle method (ugh, that just doesn't sound right:)
If that works, it's worth the $11+ for a third. But again, ipisoft will need to create the feature to record 3 people which doesn't exist yet, so I can wait. I'm hoping that if I get the same model of BTD, I can connect 8 of the Move controllers seeing as how I can currently connect 4. We'll see. Worth the gamble, and I could always take them back for refund:)

BTW, introduction of the distributed recording feature in near time will make things a lot easier in terms of using many devices.

so I got additional BTDs this afternoon. They're both the same make and model and the driver is equally same make and model. When I go to the MotionJoy application, and I want to pair the controllers, it doesn't seem like I have a choice in which BTD the controller is going to pair with. There is a dropdown list "1.Bluetooth Adapter" and "2.Bluetooth adapter, but it doesn't matter which of the dropdown I choose. The controller wants to pair with only one of the BTDs. I CAN change the MAC address here, but I'm afraid that I'm not sure how to know the differentiation. I can't simply say 00.00.00.00.00.01 versus what is more specific an address (see screenshot e1.b1.bf.38.16.0 in this case).

When you change the address and pair, the Move controller won't be a part of the default BTD pairing, so that's good. Problem I have now I think is pairing with different MAC addresses which I have the option to do. Otherwise, everything will automatically pair in the same place:/

Thought this would be easy, but I guess I'm missing something that may or may not be obvious. Still @ 4 controllers @ once. Looking for 6. Can I get 6?

Without knowing if the MAC address change makes a difference or not, it's still pretty difficult to know if there is a limit from ipirecorder for Move controllers. Is 4 the maximum?? I don't seem to have trouble getting 7 controllers to connect to the BT, which is good enough for 3 people (one day) and wrist tracking, but I'm feeling kind of low about the notion that a single BT dongle can connect 7 Move controllers but ipirecorder only reads 4. Has anyone successfully gotten more than 4 Move controllers to connect?

This is a bug in DS3 tool, it does not update other fields when the BT adapter selection changes. Just connect the adapters one by one for the pairing process.

• Connect only the first adapter, and pair 3 PS Moves to it with DS3 tool.
• Connect only the second adapter, and pair another 3 PS Moves to it.
• Connect both adapters, double check they both have MiJ drivers installed. This may be not so if you plugged them into different USB ports for pairing. In this case, just reinstall MiJ drivers for them. This should not affect previous pairing.
• Turn all 6 PS Moves on and run iPi Recorder.

I sure hope this works. Only after the fact could I possibly understand that a single piece of hardware couldn't support more than 4. A Playstation 3 sure doesn't. Why should anything else. I sure hope I can get 6 Move controllers to work. If they do, I'm sending you guys a muffin basket:)

so much yes!!! thank you!! I haven't tried recording so that's the real test, but they definitely connect to ipirecorder in the way that I want them to:D
2 BT dongles. use first BT dongle, pair 3 controllers. Uplug first BT dongle. Plug in second BT dongle, pair three controllers. quit Motion Joy.

Plug BOTH BT dongles into computer
launch ipirecorder
turn on Move controllers.
BAM
see attached!

make that 9!
3 BT dongles, 3 paired per dongle. same method as mentioned before.
kick ASS! Hope they record!
