Overall, I had a successful experience with iPi Mocap Studio 3 last night. The motion I needed today wasn't especially complicated but it tracked well.

I noticed that there is still an issue when crouching low--one leg kept wanting to pop out but correcting and tracking backwards in this region solved the trick. As before, the ground collision seems a bit high by default but I understand it's adjustable now? I haven't tried that yet--maybe tonight. I didn't wear my boots but seeing how the data looks, that's probably still a good idea. I'm not seeing the weird 'spine' issue I sometimes got in v2...but I don't think I've seen that for a while. Looking forward to the fully configurable skeleton--my shorter than average legs (or longer than average torso?) still causes some issues for the tracker but I think this feature will solve that.

What really surprised me is how fast tracking went. In v2 it took 0.67 sec per frame to track data from two Kinect sensors, but in v3 it takes about 0.65 to track data from all three sensors. Seems like tracking has gotten a bit of optimization done under the hood. (I should check if there's much difference in time tracking dual vs triple configurations.)

I also noticed a lot of UI improvements. I haven't explored all of them but looking forward to in my next tracking session.

If I have one complaint about the current v3 release, it seems like playback might not as smooth as in v2, which sometimes made it a little difficult to tell if there is a problem in the actual mocap or just a playback stutter. I'll look into this later.

Once I get comfortable with using v3 and have done a bit more work in it, I'll post a full review. :)

Hi,

My new Kinect for Windows arrived today--this one was purchased to replace the 'defective' Kinect reported earlier this week. I plugged the new Kinect into the computer and tried it immediately with iPi Recorder 3. Surprisingly, this new Kinect is giving me the same error I was getting earlier this week with the other Kinect for Windows. Then I thought to try the three Kinect for Windows with iPi Recorder 2, and in that program all three Kinect for Windows are working.

To recap: I can't get three Kinect for Windows to work in iPi Recorder 3 but I can get two Kinect for Windows plus a old Kinect for XBox to work with it. I can get three Kinect for Windows to work with iPi Recorder 2.

I have yet to try the 'defective' Kinect for Windows with Recorder 2 yet. I suspect this one might be okay but I still need to test it.

Even if it's okay, it's puzzling that the newer Kinect for Windows aren't working with Recorder 3. I wonder if the firmware is slightly different between the two more 'recent' Kinect for Windows and my two older ones.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any assistance or ideas.

I'll try a few more things tonight and post again if I learn anything new.

Okay, another update, hopefully my last. I tried using the 'defective' Kinect but could not get it to work with Recorder 2. Curiously, after having tried the 'defective' Kinect, I couldn't get the new one to work with it now either.

I rebooted the machine to see if that would change anything.

Next, I tried the 'defective' Kinect with both Recorder 2 and 3 and could not get it to work. Then I tried the new Kinect, and it worked with both Recorder 2 and 3. Augh!

I think this means the 'defective' Kinect really is defective and that the new Kinect is probably fine. I'm just not sure why I was getting such inconsistent results.

Anyway, it seems that I now have three working Kinect for Windows to use with iPi Recoder 3, so for the time being everything is good. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Just a quick follow up on this issue.

I'm back to capturing tonight and using the replacement Kinect for Windows (total 3 Kinect for Windows,) and everything is still working fine here.

Thanks for helping me troubleshoot this. :)
