Congratulations on the latest release with distributed recording guys! While I don't own a Kinect 2 yet, I'm going to try this new feature using the original Kinect as soon as I get a chance. For the time being, this will be mostly out of curiosity but I'll report what I find.

What I'm wondering is this: will distributed recording allow users to use more than three Kinect sensors (either version)? I'm mainly thinking about using multiple devices to extend the length of the capture space by having them cover different but overlapping areas. I'm hoping this will allow the system to record longer walk/run strides for looping motions.

Is this possible? I imagine you've already tested for this, and if so, do you have any tips to share? Hmm...now I'm wondering, how does this affect the calibration procedure?

Thanks in advance for any insight, and please keep up the fantastic work! :)

We have not tested this yet. As you guess, this may require substantial changes to our tracking and calibration algorithms.
We consider this as one of the research directions for this year.

Thanks for the update. Gave it a try, and it worked nicely.

I was just wondering: does distributed recording make it possible to use more than three Kinect sensors (any model) to cover a normal size/range Kinect capture space? If so, is there any improvement in quality/stability?

My guess is that using four or more sensors may increase IR interference and errors. But then again, I'm still amazed that we can successfully use two Kinects, let alone three, in iPi Mocap Studio without much error.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Using distributed recording, you can produce records with 4 Kinects. However, there is a strict limitation to 3 in Mocap Studio.

We have not yet tested 4+ Kinects configuration. We do not expect any noticeable improvements for a single person mocap. For multiple persons, it may help to deal with issue of mutual occlusion of actors. But the capture area is usually too small for multiple persons scenario.
You are right - there would be plenty of noise due to mutual interference with Kinect 1. Kinect 2 suffers far less from this issue, and such setup may be viable.

Ah! Thank you for the info--it gives us a good reason to consider upgrading our hardware to Kinect 2 in the future. :)

As I understand it, it is possible to use two Kinect 1 sensors and one Kinect 2 sensor?

No, Kinect 1 and Kinect 2 sensors cannot be mixed in one setup.
