Hello! I've been using ipisoft for a while now, but I use recorder on another computer. Now that I've gotten a new computer, I've been trying to figure out a new problem that has risen with the kinect. I'm not sure why, but whenever I open ipisoft recorder, it will recognize the kinect is there, but its says, "The sensor is not powered up. Please plug in the AC/DC adapter to power." When I check the usb, it is plugged in correctly and the block is connected to the outlet. Everything seems fine, but I keep getting the same error. Somebody please help me! (I am running on a windows 10 asus laptop)

Hmm. I had the same error with one of my Kinect for Windows v1 sensors a while back. This led me to track down a replacement which fortunately at the time was still reasonably priced (I think I paid about $160 for an 'Educational' package.)

These days, I'm transitioning to v2 sensors but I still have that 'bad' v1 sensor and I never figured out what was wrong with it. Maybe it has slightly different firmware? I guess I should check if it works on a different computer.

If using more than 1 sensor, have you tried switching AC adapters and see if that's the issue?

I just sold my Kinect for Windows version on eBay and took a big hit since it was purchased new for over $200, those cams are selling pretty cheap now, $25-$65 + shipping depending on seller and condition, AC adapter for it you may be able to find single pretty cheap too if that's all the issue is.

I have one xbox 360 with adapter available if anyone is interested, it's on eBay now... Excellent cosmetic and working condition.

Wow! Seriously? One of the reasons I'm switching up to Kinect v2 is because replacement Kinect for Windows v1 were selling for $1000 and more on Amazon (peak was at around $1800). But this was shortly after Microsoft announced they had stopped production on v1 so I guess that should have been expected.

If Kinect for Windows v1 is going that cheaply ($25 - $65) now, I may have to pick up a couple for backups. (Just to be clear, I'm not interested in Kinect for XBox v1.)

That was on eBay, I looked on Amazon and about the same (depending on seller).

Adapter is really cheap on Amazon, some for like a couple dollars used.

So if you do need any backups, now is the time to look into it, you know how prices change with the wind on those sites.

I just ordered my parts to upgrade my cabinet to handle the Kinect v2 without issue I hope, just needed the mobo, processor and a bit larger power supply, all new was $240 and all were 2015 items, mid-grade components, so I should be good for a few years since that machine is dedicated just to that one Kinect cam for now.

Later if I want to upgrade further, at least that machine will be usable with Windows 10 for other uses as well.

Hopefully it will get here fast and I will be able to use the dual Kinects soon.

Hmm. I looked up Kinect for Windows on Amazon, and it still turns up $1499. Ridiculous. I don't really see any other vendors for Kinect for Windows there. Will look into eBay though.

BTW, Kinect for Windows came with its own USB adapter. The separate adapter was only necessary to use the original XBox version with Windows.

Yes, I looked at that, is only one and who would pay that anyway, (even if brand new), 2 used on eBay right now for $100, Windows versions are in limited availability.

Kinect v2 Amazon sellers want a higher price also.

Kinect for Windows does have the adapter included yes, and isn't much different than the Kinect for xbox360 with the adapter, just a few optional camera settings.

Correct though, most for sale are xbox 360 versions without the adapter, but the adapter is cheap now to add, or if you want a backup the adapter isn't needed, you have them.

I sold the Kinect for Windows version, it was basically new, (hardly used and shipped in original box with documentation), but I just wanted to get rid of it, I will never use them again, so that person that bought it got a good deal, probably why it sold in like less than an hour, xbox version still waiting lol.

Though the box said, "Not for use with xbox 360", I think it still can be without the adapter, but not sure, I don't have a console and buyer is aware of this.

Yes, I have both Kinect for Windows v1 and Kinect for Xbox v1. There actually are actually two big differences between these versions, at least for me.

The Windows version allows you to adjust all the video properties, so you can actually see what's being recorded even under low light. This is important to me since I usually record at night with lights dimmed to reduce errors. Kinect for XBox has fixed settings so the video quality cannot be edited or improved.

Kinect for Windows v1 also has Near Mode and the XBox version does not. This is not important for iPi Mocap Studio but it's used for face capture and mesh scanning by other software.

At one time, it was good to know that MS officially supported only the Windows version for use with Windows. Obviously that point is moot now. :)

HaHa! Yes, it is moot now for me anyway.

Like I said, they are of no use to me, either version, so if that person has a use for it, great.

Kv2 in iPi doesn't have camera settings as described, but some software does have its own camera balancing adjustments, it does have near mode on the Windows version, if you can find one now, and on the xbox version. (MS doesn't sell the Windows version any longer).

Low light for the RBG video on Kv2 has no gain adjustment, so low light is performed with the IR, which also iPi doesn't offer, maybe in the future they will.

I just worry about the depth video anyway for tracking and its really clean data, you can actually kind of make out the details of the face and clothing in the depth video when up closer to the camera.

I like the Kv2 cams, I just have to get both working properly without issues and I will be set :)

Have you gotten your cameras set up to work with your system yet?

Where clear RGB comes in handy is for checking the accuracy of the depth data. It's also useful for checking hand positions when using the Move controllers.

Also, at least in the case of XBox (v1) devices, there could be great inconsistencies in the quality of the RGB between devices. I didn't see this with the Kinect for Windows (v1) version, but if I had, I was able to correct for it in the Windows version.

I'm sure that this is not the issue between XBox and K4W v2 since the two devices really are the same device, with the exception of the adapter. MS discontinued the Windows version of v2 because the device was unnecessarily re-branded and confusing the market. IMO, they should have just called the device Kinect 2 to begin with. Calling it KinectOne for XBoxOne and also calling it Kinect for Windows 2 was just dumb and confusing. :)
