WebAnimate will no longer be available as an online application as of March 2016 and switching to full off-line version only.

They are offering a FOREVER software licence, no yearly subscription payment, if you are a WebAnimate user now, you will receive a 30% discount to renew to this new model, new users may be eligible for this discount, I am not sure, check link below.

WebAnimate is a fully functional, powerful animation editor for use with FBX and BVH file formats, similar to Motion Builder, but using WebAnimates' IK Solver and ACP, as well as a full arsenal of editing processes.

Retargeting any character is very easy, with full control of motion capture files to create smooth and seamless animations and editing.

Here is the link to check it out: http://www.ikinema.com/index.php?mod=webanimate

I am a current user of the off-line version, if you don't have an account now, you may have to sign-up.

There is a 14 day trial of the software for new users, it's well worth checking out.

If you can't afford Motion Builder, this is a great alternative for smoothing/editing/creating animations from your iPi MoCap files!

Yes, I found out about this a month or so ago. I've been looking for an inexpensive alternative to my aging Motion Builder 2011 license for some time now and grabbed the new standalone version of Webanimateimmediately. At $100, Webanimate seems like an incredible bargain even compared to iClone with 3DXchange.

I'm just starting to work with it and I'll post my thoughts about the how well the software works with iPi Mocap Studio soon.

Well, I think it has pluses and minuses, does have some bugs that are irritating, but for the cost it works ok for what I use it for.

I basically just use it with adding the Ikinema rig and not using the ACP rig and I don't really need the foot sliding correction or feet penetration feature when using iPis' AMT on export from my PS Eye tracking, this may be more beneficial for Kinects.

It has basically some of the same features as Motion Builder, although a lighter version, and for an alternative it's pretty good for clean up.

One issue I don't like and reported to Ikinema, is that a 60 fps BVH import, no matter the export time or speed setting when exporting, will slow the animation to 30 fps, but this doesn't occur when importing or exporting an FBX file, I prefer to use BVH format when I can, due to some quirkiness in bone positioning with iPis' FBX format exports.

Ikinema has an update coming in late March or early April, so I hope they can address this slowing on export of BVH format issue, but for now I just do any finalizing in another 3D editor, then slide the timeline keying to make the animation the speed I want.

Good Luck with it, it's definitely worth the $100 USD, especially since now is a forever license for this major version.

I would like to read your feedback on it as well, after you get some time in with it.

Thanks for your feedback! I'm always interested in hearing your views about these tools too.

Now that my website reboot is out of the way, I'm able to focus on using iPi Mocap Studio again, and I plan to post some new workflow articles/videos. Motion Builder vs Webanimate vs iClone/3DX is one of the first comparisons I want to do. (In addition to finishing our music video of course.) :)

Sounds interesting... since i just have a educational license of MotionBuilder i will be looking for an alternative to mocap cleanup and making loops like walk cycles and stuff. I use mainly the Story tool in MB so far. It is the only 3d animation tool i've tried besides Maya which i kinda gave up trying to learn and that also have the same limitation as with MB, it's an education license... not that it matters right now, but in the long run.

Anyway, im in particular interested in a tool that is good for correcting curves, sliding feet, locking of limbs in general (obviously for the rock climbing animations).

Please post your findings with WebAnimate

edit: just checked price for MotionBuilder 2016 Perpetual License, 700usd! yaiks! But it do seem worth it too... What do professionals use for mocap cleanup?

That's been my situation. We have Motion Builder 2011 (maybe it's 2010...not sure at the moment,) but it's an educational license we got when Alisa was teaching at Gnomon. I would upgrade except that it's so darn expensive and I don't feel Autodesk has ever been very serious about improving it. For now, our Educational version works but it's definitely getting creaky, so I've been patiently waiting for a capable mocap editor that's reasonably priced and in active development to come along.

So far, that appears to be WebAnimate and iClone with 3DXchange. We got both a while ago but until recently, I've been too sidetracked with work and a few pressing projects. We're finally back to working with iPi Mocap Studio and our short film now though, so I hope I'll be posting my thoughts on how these two compare with Motion builder, and how well they play with Mocap Studio soon.

I thought MoBu is like $400 mth subscription? $3600 per version stand alone license? I would have to look again, I could be misstating.

I have 6 different types of editors, Mobu, Maya, 3ds Max all 2014, WebAnimate 2016 Stand Alone, iClone 6 and Blender, along with iPi Studio as an editor also.

Professionals meaning Pixar or Disney? Most of the very large studios use in-house designed software, along with commercial software like MoBu. Maya for modeling.

You can trial WebAnimate for 14 days, just to see its UI and features, (several tutorials on its use online and right in the Help Tab of the program), it's useful for its $100 USD forever main version license now.

It is easier than MoBu, you can import several different takes also and blend them as you do with story in MoBu, has a bone pinning feature and a key editor, not really a curve editor, has ACP which is a smoothing feature with many adjustment parameters.

There is another called MODO, its cost is much higher, but less than MoBu and has some great animation features.

Check it out.

Yes, something ridiculous like that. Webanimate is around $90 or so--quite a difference in price. iClone with 3DXChange is closer to $600 I think. Granted, Webanimate probably doesn't do as much as Mobu but considering I only use a subset of Mobu's tools, I think Webanimate or iClone is potentially a great value. (I say 'potentially' only because I haven't really used these two yet.) If they're easier to use too, then I'm all for it.

When I was with Rhythm & Hues, the studio developed and maintained proprietary software for animation, compositing and rendering. They did use ZBrush and Maya for modeling, and Houdini for certain FX work. The department I was part of, The Box, used mostly 'off-the-shelf' software, which mainly meant Maya, LightWave, ZBrush, Vue Xstream, Photoshop and Fusion. We sometimes used Blender and Houdini to create specific fx elements. We also developed a lot of smaller but specialized tools. For mocap, we usually worked with Giant or House of Moves but my supervisor was always interested in my iPi Mocap Studio experiments. In fact, back in the 'beta days', some of my earliest iPi Desktop Motion Capture tests were shot in our cafe area (using Logitech cameras) late at night. Shortly after I created the first 'Brudders Music Video' scenes at home, my boss and I discussed possibly using Mocap Studio on a video game cinematic job. Sadly, that was just around the time Rhythm started to collapse.

After that, I freelanced with The Asylum for about a year and a half, and there we mainly used LightWave, Fusion and After Effects. Some of the crew also used Maya, Max, RealFlow, and Houdini for specific situations. The Asylum also had a license of Mocap Studio but I think I was the only one there who knew how to use it. I set Mocap Studio in a meeting room once but after that I found it was easier to shoot at home with my personal license and bring the data in to work on.

These days, I'm on staff at DreamWorks Animation. I can't talk about the software used there but I think I can say it's a mix of proprietary and commercial software. The team I'm with uses mainly off-the-shelf software but we also write some of our own tools.

So, in my experience from big to small studios, the range of software is used can vary quite a lot, and it can include proprietary, 'consumer' or 'pro' software. Generally, studios want to use whatever it takes to get the job done quickly and with great results.

I occasionally use Modo but only for modeling, not animation. It used to be reasonably priced. I started out with Modo 101 but I stopped upgrading at version 601. They've since integrated a version of Ikinema for rigging and animation, so it bears much similarity to Webanimate.

Yes, true many variations of software are used, most bang for the buck these days :)

You can actually research online what Major Studios use, or have released for public knowledge anyway, as they actually design per movie different aspects they need in their production workflow.

I believe many also use Linux OS, true for Dream Works too probably?

The new Character Creator for iClone 6 is cool too with the Essentials add-on and now they added custom made slider ability and importable clothing and hair files to use the physics engine easier in iClone 6, but I haven't either had time to fully work with it all.

Wow, so many apps there ...thanx a lot. But i guess i should look into some of them for sure. Its funny when i search for MotionBuilder tuts, i only find a handfull. So my impression was, that people was using something else. But yes im interested in finding the right tool, that are easiest to work with, and brings most versatility to the table, while still being actively used by an active supporting community.

I'll start checking out some of the trail versions i can find.

Btw nice to also hear about all the different places you worked at, and the fact that you're using custom tools.. Pretty cool stuff there :-)
