Also, even though four cameras are working well for me, I suspect six will be more than my system can handle. Just wondering, has anybody tried five cameras? I think maybe my system could handle five.

Are you worried about disk I/O when recording? I wonder how far out the 'write to RAM' addition for ipi will be?

There's always the FarStone RAMDISK?

I'd also like to hear from ipi about how much of a difference going from 4 to 6 makes before I invest. I don't have enough width in my room to put them all in a perfect circle.

Partly. I'm not sure my SATA3 drive is fast enough for six streams. It does work very well for four streams of 640 x 480 at 60fps.

As for RAM disks, I'm currently capturing performances that run for about 5 to 7 shots, which can run thousands of frames. That's a lot of data and I don't think I have enough RAM to hold all this, especially if I do multiple takes. I could of course dump the RAM disk to a real drive between takes, that could get to be too many interruptions during a shoot.

I'm also concerned about having enough USB bandwidth for six cameras at full res and speed, and I'm not sure if a quad-core system can handle all this data (iPi's specs recommends a six-core system for six cameras.) In theory I have enough USB controllers for six: I'm using one onboard controller for two cameras, the other one one for a wireless keyboard and mouse and a WIFI stick. One USB 3.0 card is handling the other two cameras, and the second USB 3.0 card is being used as a SATA3 interface. I could maybe put one more camera on the second onboard controller, and one camera on the second USB 3.0 card.

But I don't really want to think about that now. As I said earlier, the four camera setup is working well for me and I want to stay focused on getting this project done first. :)
