Direct3d 10 is only available for Vista and Win7, so does this software actually work on Windows XP.
Yes it does work on Windows XP.

The ipisoft product page says that the software can use windows XP, but requires a direct3d 10 video card.
Yes, it's true. You need a DirectX 10-compatible video card for running this software, even under WinXP. This is a GPGPU software (it does calculations on a video card). It requires a video card with serious support for 32-bit floating point math. Existing DirectX 9 cards only support 24-bit FP math. So you need a DirectX 10 card despite the fact that our software uses DirectX 9 API.

having to do several thousand dollars worth of hardware and software upgrades would make it impractical
You can get a decent mid-range DirectX 10 video card for around $100.

Does anyone know if the free trial period software will handle a 6 camera solution?
Trial version supports up to 4 cameras. You will be able to preview capture results for 6-camera video but you won't be able to export animation for it.

If I do a 6 camera shoot, can I have the ipisoft software only use the video from 4 of the cameras when I process it later into mocap data?
Theoretically you can edit your video and cut extra cameras. You can use VirtualDub for editing (it is free).
