Hello.

I would like to purchase the iPiSoft this week but I am not sure whether my computer is up for it in regards to the cameras. I have a iMac, Intel i3 with ATI 4670 graphics card and 4GB RAM. Is it possible to run iPiSoft with 3-4 PlayStation cameras? Or is it better for me to deal with Microsoft Kinect as I have read that it does not require alot of processing power.

Thank you for your time.

If I'm not very much mistaken, iPiRecorder is free of charge so just go ahead and try. A (windows7) laptop with i5 @2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility HD5850 cannot handle more than 3 PS3 cameras with 60 fps. With four cameras I can record 50 fps but no more. I have a faint memory that I read somewhere from this forum that you need one processor core per camera but I cannot be certain about that.

Alright. Ill purchase a Kinect and 3 Playstation Cameras. Since I only support 2 cores, 2 cameras, Ill give 3 cameras a try. If slow...Ill go with Kinect.

Thanks.

I use both systems and IMO, if you're just starting out, Kinect is a good entry level system. It's easy to set up and use and the hardware requirements are lower than with the PS3 cameras.

The PS3 Eye system (with four to six cameras) is much more capable than Kinect but it does require a fairly beefy computer system and setting it up is much more involved. Not trying to be discouraging but I thought you should know.

If all you have to record with is the laptop, I would suggest Kinect. I have to use a fairly recent i7 quad core computer with an SSD to use six PS3 Eye camera but my old duo core laptop is adequate for Kinect.

And ppe is correct: iPi Recorder is free so you can take your time experimenting with it.

Hope this helps.

One more thing to consider: if your laptop is fairly recent it's likely good to use with Kinect. My laptop, however, is a 'first generation' duo core so it's pretty old, and I had to add a USB 3.0 Expresscard with a USB 3.0 drive to make it work reliably with iPi and Kinect. I also have a Tablet PC and writing directly to the internal drive seems to work with this computer. Not much luck with an external though. I would not normally use this computer for recording mocap but it's possible.

Just thought this info might be helpful for laptop users.

I think Michael wrote a few weeks ago (June?) that the support for two Kinects is added to the next major version which is due in two months time (August?). It seems like they are already promoting the feature.
