apologies if this is obvious but......

why are the bones named "ipi:*" on bvh export? i load a target fbx in, everything matches up with the standard motionbuilder names. then i export the mocap and i notice that the names have "ipi:*" in front of them now. so my software (lightwave) doesn't merge the data into the character scene. is there an option to have more standard namings somewhere? at the moment i have to rename everything manually in lightwave.

hi mr bones.

the naming on import or export? the import appears to work as my custom character follows the capture motion perfectly

Hi Nik,

I would like to see both,

So is it adding iPi: to all the bone names on export or after export?

That sounds like a bug. I will also check it to confirm.

I would need the same target character to check as well!

only after export. specificaly a "motionbuilder" fbx file.

if you let me know exactly what you need i'll sort it over the weeknd

hey again.

here are 2 zips, both contain fbx files.

one is the file i used to retarget (with normal names) the other is the exported motionbuilder fbx that appear to have "ipi:" appended before the bone names.

Hi Nik,

I tried them and your right.

I think its a bug, I exported as a BVH and it did not add the names.

The import character works perfectly/

I'm not an expert but I believe that's called a Namespace. In MotionBuilder you can choose to apply a Namespace or not during import and export. It's a way to group things in the program. For example you might use Namespaces as a way to distinguish the rigs of two different characters that may otherwise have identical rigs. You can add or remove Namespaces by using the Add/Remove Namespace tool in MotionBuilder.

I also use iPi with Lightwave and I make sure I don't export my FBX using Namespace because (as you discovered,) Namespace is not allowed in Lightwave and it prevents the Load From Scene - Use Only Motion Envelopes command from transferring FBX motion data to your Lightwave character.

I haven't tried exporting an FBX directly from iPi Studio yet. If there isn't an option to disable the 'iPi' Namespace, there probably should be. Anyway, you should be able to remove this easily if you have Motion Builder. To be honest though, if you do have MB, you should simply import the .bvh to MB and do the retargeting there.

If you don't have Motion Builder and the iPi Studio exporter doesn't give you the option to disable Namespace, try the FBX Convertor tool from Autodesk. You can download it for free at their website. I'm not completely certain about this but it might have the option to strip the Namespace. If not, you can probably save the FBX as ASCII and remove the Namespace with a search and replace. Again, not 100% certain about this as I've never tried doing that myself.

Sorry that I can't be more certain about this info but I hope this helps. If you like, I can look into it on this end and see if I can confirm what I just wrote. I'll need more info about your intended workflow of course.

thanks for both replies, i'm glad its not me being a newbie and missing a setting somewhere.

unfortunately i don't have motionbuilder and all experiments with animeeple have proven to be very close but not quite right (issues with legs being always bent)

nope no option to disable the namespace as far as i can tell, i shall try the fbx converter thingy later. it's so close to being a perfect simple ipi\lightwave pipeline for me with no additional steps. hope there's an easy way around it.

how does bug reporting work here? shall i email the developer? or are they active on here?

thanks a bunch for your help sofar. greenlaw your posts on the newtek forum have been a great help sofar, making mocap for my little short film a viable option.

There's no formal way to report bugs here but you can either email the devs directly or post in the 'Issues' section of the forums. As typical, you should provide as much info about the problem, your hardware/sofware setup, and what you are trying to do with the software.
