Are you using a desktop or a laptop? Without knowing anything about your computer setup, my guess is that this a data throughput issue.
I know that with my old laptop I need to use a USB 3.0 Expresscard and a USB 3.0 drive to be able to capture with the Kinect; if I use an ordinary USB drive, capture will stop after a few seconds. Recording to the USB 3.0 drive is how I normally use the Kinect with iPi Recorder.
On my newer Tablet PC, I cannot use the Expresscard and I cannot capture more than a few seconds to an ordinary USB 2.0 drive. However, if I record directly to my system drive, I can capture a steady stream. That said, it is not recommended that you record to your system drive.
With my desktop, recording is done to an SSD dedicated to iPi Recorder capture, and the Kinect has absolutely no problem with this; for that matter, the Kinect has no problem recording to an oridinary drive with the desktop.
Hope this info helps.
