That's unfortunate. I would try the software with another computer and see if it works there, or if you've given up I would contact iPi Soft directly by email and explain your situation. Hope things work out for you.

Strange issue.

I use ipisoft with a classical dual core 4 core, 8 gb ram and kinect: it works like a charm. No capture problem with long motion. Works well.

I have tryed to capture with kinect on a poor NETBOOK and it works too. Without any lose of frame. Haven't tried yet a big capture on this, but most do soon.

There has to be an easy solution to this. It's simply not that hard to record video with the Kinect and doesn't require a supercomputer to do so.

Is the Kinect connected directly to the computer or are you using an extension cable or USB hub of some type?

Good point.

I suspect it's a bandwidth issue with the drive though. For example, I'm currently using the Kinect with a five year old duo-core laptop, and to get it to work I needed to add a USB 3.0 card Expresscard and USB 3.0 drive. Prior to that, I could not capture more than 15 seconds. Now I can capture with this computer continuously for many minutes and it works perfectly.

I have also tested Kinect with a newer Tablet PC which does not have a slot for an Expresscard and with it I could not capture Kinect data to an ordinary USB 2.0 drive. However, if I captured directly to my system drive, capturing was fine fine with no dropped frames. (BTW, I don't normally recommend capturing to a system drive unless it's an SSD; I only did this as a test.)

Anyway, the point is, these are both modestly powered computers, so yes it's true that iPi Recorder does not require a very powerful computer to capture with Kinect. For the best results, however, you should still try to give the Kinect/iPi software as much bandwidth as possible. I know a USB 2.0 drive *should* work, but I would try using something faster drive like a SATA 6GB or USB 3.0. (If it's an older computer, you many need to add a controller card like I did with the laptop described above.)

You might also try using the Kinect with different computer to see if the problem isn't with the Kinect device.

Hope this helps.

G.

I use the standart usb 2.0 of my motherboard and I have no problem to capture.

To connect camera, I use a 10 meter long cable with a usb hub.
BUT, With this kind of long cable The hub must have a signal amplifier because you can
have lose of signal streng in the cable...

Yeah, like I said, this really should work, but I personally haven't had any luck with USB 2.0 drives for Kinect. In my case, I'm sure this is because the laptop I use is very old.

I imagine newer laptops should be fine though because of faster processors and other hardware and OS optimizations. Many new laptops even support USB 3.0 natively these days so if you do need a faster drive it's much easier to add one.

You really shouldn't need that "much" of a system to capture. I can capture with 6 cameras on my quad core system and (as far as I can tell so far) 4 cameras on my Dell dual core. You really shouldn't need anything more than that to use Kinect. I am really surprised that you are having these issues. There has GOT to be some minor thing that all of us are overlooking.
