you know what would be cool?
Primesense coming out with an HD 120fps version of the Kinect. Clearly there's a pro market for it.
It would still have to be cheap though. Vicon systems are starting to get down to the 5k range. And they offer real time with head and wrist tracking. Thank god for Ipi. I'm actually getting real work done here without having to go through the mess of setting up and billing time for our own friggin pro mocap stages. Of course, I'm not a stunt man so there's always that limitation. All my mocap looks like me - a fat, out of shape animator.

Anyway, dunno what 3 kinects would offer over 2, other than even less capture space. Maybe if you mounted it to the ceiling looking down? Perhaps using the RGB data can help with accuracy. You could wear a shirt and pants with different colored sleeves and legs. Meh, I dunno. Does that sound reasonable?

I want to mount 2 kinects to my car. Get a real-time 3d view of the space around it for when I parallel park. Heh.

If it is possible, three Kinects would give you full 360 coverage for improved accuracy. Even with two, you can lose track of occluded body parts. But you're right, it could possibly mean an even smaller performance space and a larger room requirement. At that point, it might be better to go with six PS3 cameras.

Just to be clear, I'm speculating of course. I was totally wrong before about two Kinects being impossible but today I'm finishing a movie that was entirely shots using two Kinects. :)

room ? anyoen try just taking the kinects outside and hook a laptop up to your house or something ? I figure that would solve the problem with indoor space.. .

I tihnk with 3 kinects I would need to find a outdoor space .. but if its like a basketball court. woudlnt that work ? ? Two bad the kinect cameras need a battery source

It doesnt work well outside.

I tried it, and it requires a back ground and even level floor space.

If it it hasswalls like a tennis court that might work, Raquetball might work,

I also know football (indoors ) and Golf (indoors) worked quite well.

So generally anything with a nice wall for the back and a floor for the ground plane might work.

There are no requirements for lighting. so you could do it in the dark.

Or clothing, Yes you could try it nude if your so inclined.

Cheers

For all intents and purposes, it seems that 2 kinects is actually at least 300 degree coverage.

It looks like a hologram to me inside iPiSoft. Its almost Uncanny!

You have to have to use 2 seperate usb controllers for the 2 kinects to work..

They must be plugged into 2 seperate usb controllers. I do believe.

I think I read that somewhere

I had to try all different combination of usb ports until I found the right combinations.. eventually i had both plugged into the usb 3 side of my laptop... but the 2 kinects cant take advantage of usb 3 can it ?

and if there is a 3 kinect version how can the laptop handle 3 cameras at 30fps ?

I would definitely find a use for 3+ kinect support.

We have a large office and so space isn't an issue.
I would hook up both setups next to each other as to extend the capture area.

The challenge would be to calibrate both sets of kinect.
Maybe by having the capture areas overlap.

Just a thought but when you reach that point wouldn't it make more sense to use multiple PS3 Eye cameras? Properly set up, the PS3 eye configuration is more accurate than the Kinect configuration and it allows for significantly larger capture space. The Kinect is really more useful for smaller spaces, and two Kinects already allow for full 360 captures.
